August sees the return of New York prog rock gods Coheed and Cambria, having announced a string of headline UK dates with support from Polyphia. Interestingly, instrumental math rock act Polyphia hailing from Texas describe their recent album, New Levels New Devils, released in October 2018, as “probably the best music in the history of music” although perhaps best not to take statements like that too seriously.
Since Coheed and Cambria’s album release Vaxis – Act I: The Unheavenly Creatures, also released in October 2018, the band have shared various tracks including a beautiful acoustic version of The Gutter on their official YouTube channel which can be heard below:
With their unique take on prog rock, Coheed and Cambria have created their own world through their music and comic books with a science fiction storyline called The Amory Wars.
The Unheavenly Creatures is their ninth studio album and a welcome return to the Amory Wars concept with the first instalment of the Vaxis series, which introduces new characters and a new cinematic story. Swelling with 15 songs over 78 minutes, the First Act in a brand-new story arc set within the backdrop of The Amory Wars universe.
The title track, directed by P.R. Brown. takes viewers inside the story’s opening chapters where two captured criminals (Creature and Colossus) being walked through a ship on their way towards judgement for crimes committed against society, and perhaps, one another.

On returning to the bands Amory Wars concept, frontman Claudio Sanchez stated:
‘I think most people are asking because the last record was a departure from it. I always knew we would (return to the concept). When I wrote the last record, it was the first time I had experienced becoming a dad and I thought it was important for me to tribute that new record without the idea of a concept. This time around, I felt like coming back to it. I left the Afterman story sort of open-ended. I don’t know if we’re necessarily concluding that story within the Amory Wars, but I always knew there would be a return.’
Coheed have also released a video to the sublime “The Pavilion (A Long Way Back)” in anticipation of their extensive tour which can be seen below.
Comprised of Claudio Sanchez (Vocals / Guitar), Travis Stever (Guitar), Josh Eppard (Drums), and Zach Cooper (Bass), Coheed and Cambria have gripped listeners and media with their visionary compositions and conceptual mastery for the last 17 plus years and continue to surprise and raise the bar with each release.
Rockshot are looking to bring you a full live review from the O2 Academy, Leeds along with images of all the action, this should be one of hell of a show.
