J Mascis – Tour preview 2019

Since his last gig in Leeds in 2015, I’ve been patiently awaiting the return of the indie rock hero J Mascis to these shores again. Following the cancellation of his original tour dates back in January, due to personal reasons, the rescheduled dates can’t come soon enough, and this time round he is supported by Rosali Middleman – a Philadelphia singer-songwriter.

With the release late last year of J’s recent and sublime solo album ‘Elastic Days’, it’s safe to say the anticipation of seeing him perform these tracks, along with such classics as ‘Every Morning’ and my personal favourite ‘Several Shades of Why’, is palpable. He may even treat us to a version of ‘Out There’, which is rare but you never know.

If that wasn’t enough to tempt you, he’s also just covered and delivered a fantastic version of Tom Petty’s ‘Don’t Do Me Like That’.

With Tom’s untimely passing in 2017, this is a deserving homage to an amazing song writer and talent, performed by someone equally talented but perhaps not as recognised. With J’s solo work mainly being acoustic over the years, it’s easy to forget how good a guitar player, especially a lead player, he really is. This is a stark reminder that this man can still shred with the best of them and it actually wouldn’t be out of place on a Dinosaur Jr release.

You can take a listen to it here:

This Leeds show is the third on the UK stint of his European tour and is on Saturday 11th May at Belgrave Music Hall. This is definitely one not to be missed! I’m looking forward to photographing him in action and doing a full review of the show which will be available on RockShot soon after along with the images.
